HOW TO STOP PEOPLE FROM BUGGING YOU ABOUT GETTING MARRIED
Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, "You're next." They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

I had trouble sleeping last night.

I saw the movie "Hostel" last night and it scared the ever living shit out of me. I was in a constant state of 'freaked out' and 'omg I am so disturbed I think i'm going to vomit.' It was weird. What else can you expect from something that involves Quentin Tarantino.

But seriously, I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that I was like "oh my god, seriously, that could happen". If you've ever traveled abroad and really 'backpacked it'. And I'm not talking about traveling abroad and staying in hotels. That is an experience in itself but not what I'm aiming at here. I mean roughing it.

You don't know where you're going next, half the people that our now your 'close friends' are randoms you met last night at the bar and probably bonded with over numerous pints of god only knows what and the fact that you both say 'hello/allo' different. Roughing it to the point that you sometimes wake to find yourself in a bed, but not yours and not necessarily the bed of someone you've hooked up with, just the place you fell the night before. Or worse, the sidewalk you laid down on only to awake and find out that that sidewalk is connected to a very busy, main street. All because you didn't know where you were going to sleep that night.

Because of all of this, because of the whim of irresponsibility embraced without a thought...you befriend and trust certain people that ultimatley might not be that friendly. Added to that you could probably trust them about as far as you could throw them. Combine all of this, all of this knowledge and carpe diem attitude, that brief time where you throw caution to the wind and try, just this once, to let go of your inhibitions and just experience everything, you could easily find yourself in some serious life threatening trouble.

THIS is why "Hostel" scared the absolute shit out of me. I can't even count how many times I've put myself in similar situations where something really bad could have happened to me. Don't get me wrong. I had some kick ass times and lots of memories but jesus, talk about giving yourself the willies. Yikes. In my opinion, whatever it's worth - Good movie. Recomend seeing it if you can stomach it.

yum

I have a weakness.
It's called eclair cake.
Oh my god its my favorite and I got a bug up my ass this weekend and finally made one. I can't stop eating it. It's great. And to prove that, as soon as I got home from the gym last night, instead of cutting a square of it out and placing it on a plate. I took the whole damn pan and sat my ass in front of the tv to watch the end of the golden globes and the bachelor and I ate straight from the pan. Don't worry. I left a piece. But only one. Nice dinner eh? I'm at the point now where I'm just trying to eat it to get rid of it, the fact that it tastes so damn good is an added bonus of course. Geez.

Couldn't resist. I tagged along

1. What did you do in 2005 that you’d never done before? borrowed money from my dad and an ex boyfriend
2. Did you keep your New Year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year? My 05 resolution was to get out of the bartending scene and push my design career forward. I did that but now I feel like I've sort of fallen back and am treading water. Yes I have lots for next year.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth? yeah my cousin joan and my ex pat.
4. Did anyone close to you die? no. i keep my finers crossed
5. What countries did you visit? mmmm Jamaica even though the only part of it I saw was the cab ride to margaritta ville but damn that slide was fun. And I won a margaritta in a booty shaking contest. hell yeah.
6. What would you like to have in 2006 that you lacked in 2005? a better understanding of design concepts, a bigger portfolio, more freelance work and a better job with a higher salary. Aim high right? :)
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? Being happy with myself.
9. What was your biggest failure? Not saving accordingly when I went from 60+ hours of work down to 40 hours with less hourly pay. And getting two credit cards.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury? oh jesus, what havent' I hurt in soccer. sprained my wrist, messed up my ankle so that I have to tape it before every game or I seriously can't kick the ball, hurt my thigh so bad that even though the bruise and huge lump has gone down after months there is still a scar.
11. What was the best thing you bought? a desk!!
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration? all of my friends for always being their for me
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed? my brother
14. Where did most of your money go? you know what, this time, i can't even say clothes. Honestly, rent, flights to see my dad, furniture and accessories for my kick ass apartment. I never knew I could get so excited about bath towels and candles. Yikes I"m my mother
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? moving into our apartment and getting a walk in closet. and you wonder why i dont' go out
16. What song will always remind you of 2005? nothing. i listen to the radio and as soon as i start hearing the same thing too many times I drive to work with it off.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:I. happier or sadder? Happier
II. thinner or fatter? i'm a yoyo. it sucks. i think i'm constantly the same unless I really really gain weight which i've been known to do.
II. richer or poorer? as poor as I've ever been.
18. What do you wish you’d done more of? saved money
19. What do you wish you’d done less of? actually nothing. that would be regretting and I hate to regret
20. How did you spend Christmas? visiting family, visiting my brother in jail, worrying my grandma would say something about my weight, worrying she wouldnt' say something about my weight, then to my mom's house holed up in her office on the computer while her and her friends got drunk in the living room. Bed early. This is why I prefer to not come home.
But when I got back to chicago, those couple hours before bed and work the next day, were the best xmas ever!! :)

Kyle

Well, I wrote a letter to my brother today.

It's difficult to address the letter and next to his name put his inmate/ID #. My brother....a criminal. I'm asleep right. This has all been a bad dream. No Jessica, it's not a dream. It's life, real and true. All the ugliness and beauty get thrown together on one big canvas and the final art is what we see everyday.
I didn't write to him to tell him that everything's ok, that I'm proud of him or that if he needs anything I'll be here. No. I wrote him and instead I told him what I feel.

He didn’t get the sugar coated version. I told him, you’ve hurt people, you’ve let people down and you’ve misused people’s generosity over and over again.

Does this make me horrible? Does this make me a bad person? Maybe it does. Maybe it makes me selfish or coldhearted. Or maybe it makes me wise. It’s me. I’ve accepted that.

Some days, I have a brother, other days, I forget that I have one. I forget that I’m not an only child trying desperatley for my families approval. I forget that out there, outside of the world I’ve built around myself, there is a boy, who incidently now looks like a man, who has the same voice as me. Who used to idolize me as a child and then hate me as a teenager. A boy who I welcomed into life with open arms only to push him away not to long after because his presense didn’t quite suit my group.

I wrote to him, I love you. I have faith in you to become someone. I have hope. But all of this is nothing if he doesn’t make those choices. Everyone has a destiny but it's the choices that have a hand in leading you to it.

So now that I’ve taken time to acknowledge him, I’ll turn yet again back to my life. Where somedays I’ll remember that I have a brother and somedays I won’t. I don’t know when we’ll ever truly have a relationship. I've chosen the path that requires the least amount of effort. It's my choice, I live with it. I wonder what choices he'll begin to make and if in a round about way, both our choices will lead us closer together, or farther apart.

gotta love this

"I was amused when someone said I was ‘too secure.’"
—Gwen, 46, Menlo Park, CA
Dr. Glass: "A man who quakes in his boots at the sign of a woman who’s successful has a lot of mother issues he hasn’t worked out. It’s a sign of emotional impotence that could be physical, too, so she may have just saved herself from a bad sex life."
